Vacation Recap

I wish I had gorgeous pictures of the homes of Charleston to share with you from my trip to Isle of Palms last weekend, but instead it appears I spent 48 hours eating. While there for a DC friend's birthday, we went to both Husk and Magnolia's, relaxed around the stunning house, and did some shopping on King Street.

I hate to say it, but as much as I loved the ambiance and rustic simplicity of Husk, I was a bit disappointed by the food. It gets so much hype, yet my burnt cornbread and a somewhat flavorless chicken sandwich just didn't justify all the build up. The saving grace was a super rich flourless chocolate cake. Perhaps I'll try their Nashville location next time I'm out that way, but for now, I'm thinking overrated.

Magnolia's, on the hand, was absolutely divine. The table got several appetizers which I can't exactly recall (hey, I was a few mint julep's in at this point), but I know there were mac and cheese balls, pepper jelly, and fried green tomatoes involved and they were all absolutely delicious. I had crab cakes and succotash as my main course and it was the perfect light dinner. And, because I can never turn down dessert, the Warm Cream Cheese Pecan Brownie was heaven for a chocolate lover like myself. The waiter told me it has been written up in Southern Living as one of the south's top desserts and I am 100% in agreement with that assessment.

It was a quick trip down south as I had to get back for a party in Washington that just couldn't be missed, but hopefully I'll be back again before too long.

  1. Never been to Charleston but I've heard several other people say Husk didn't love up to their expectations! Would love to make a trip someday

  2. So glad you enjoyed your time in Charleston! I will sadly have to agree about Husk not living up to all of it's hype... we took some friends there a few months ago and wasn't too crazy about the food. Magnolia's however never ceases to please so I'm glad you all enjoyed that! :)
